In the recently concluded ODI series against West Indies, Indian opening batsman Shubman Gill was in good form and registered 205 runs, including a best score of 98 in the third and final ODI. This performance helped him get the Player of the Series accolade. After the series win, captain Shikhar Dhawan had said that Gill had a touch of Rohit in him. However, former New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris believes it is too early to label him a complete player and there are holes in his process.
“You’re always learning, even towards the end Tendulkar is still learning about his craft and he plays, what is it? 200 games. So, you know, I think, you’re not going to label anybody at least, like Shubman Gill as a complete player. I still think there are holes in his game. I think there are holes in his strategy that the opponent will look to exploit, but he has all the skills and components another,” Styris said on SPORTS18’s daily sports news show ‘ SPORTS ON THE TOP’.
“What makes a world player is their mental process and their development and their leadership. And I think you still have this as well. And for that reason, yes it is right that you can make it there including the Rohits, KL Rahuls. and Shikhars in terms of openers,” he added.
On the other hand, former national selector Saba Karim believes that Gill can continue to lead Punjab in domestic tournaments and that captaincy experience will help the right-handed batsman in the future.
“I think it’s good to have that kind of experience. And I think a year, two years down the line we can see Shubman stepping up to lead one of these on the Indian T20 league. And I think once he gets that kind of experience, In addition, he can manage to lead Punjab at the domestic level which will go well for him, so, he will have experience and as he said in truth, he has shown some skills leader. the future,” Karim said.
“I see him as a versatile player because at this level, people have seen him bowl well for India as a starter. But for the opportunity, I am sure he can do well at number three, number four and I think mostly. in the T20 format, you look at players who can bat at number one, number two and number three. So, I think in such a format, Shubman Gill can easily do well,” he added. .
On Saturday, Gill was named in India’s squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe, starting on August 18.
