Ten policemen were suspended on Wednesday for allegedly embezzling Rs 6 crore of funds seized from a merchant in Thane district in Maharashtra state, officials said.

On a tip-off, a team from Mombra Police Station here raided the merchant’s apartment building on April 11 and confiscated Rs 30 crore in cash, according to an official statement.

Sources said the merchant was trading in toys and was also involved in construction work.

The money was transferred to the police station. The accused policemen allegedly told the merchant that they would let him out if he paid them Rs 6 crore.

The merchant agreed to pay them Rs 2 crore, but the accused allegedly took Rs 6 crore and returned Rs 24 crore to him.

The bulletin said that the trader then contacted Thane Police Commissioner and senior Home Ministry officials with a complaint, after which the 10 policemen were suspended on Wednesday.

Among the arrested policemen were an inspector, two assistant inspectors, five nikes and two policemen.

The statement added that the police commissioner is conducting further investigations into the incident.
