Smriti Irani must apologize to the President, says Adhir Chowdhury of the Congress -by Ecork

New Delhi:

Days after his controversy for referring to President Droupadi Murmu as ‘Rashtrapatni’, Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Sunday wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, calling on Union Minister Smriti Irani to issue an “unreserved apology” for the name-calling. Droupadi’ Murmu’ without using the prefix ‘Aare.’

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury drew a lot of ire from the BJP after his “Rashtrapatni” comment, which the Congress leader said was “slanderous as it is not very good in Hindi.”

However, the BJP has demanded an apology from Mr Chowdhury along with Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi.

In a letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker, the Congress MP said, “I want to reiterate that it is because of a slip of the tongue that the name of our Madam President has been dragged into an unnecessary and unwarranted controversy. This wrongful mistake happened because I am not very good in Hindi. I have regretted my mistake and I have apologized to the President.”

However, he pointed out that the manner in which Smriti Irani took the name of President in the House was not good and in accordance with the status and position of the President.

“However, I may like to point out that the way Smriti Irani takes the name of Madam President in the House is not good and in accordance with the position and position of the President. She is shouting ‘Droupadi Murmu’ repeatedly without Prefixing President or Madam or Smt before before the President’s name. This is clearly a downfall of the office of the President, so I request that Smriti Irani may apologize unconditionally to the President for her disrespectful words and for lowering the honor and standing of the office of the President,” Mr. Chowdhury said in a letter

The problem is compounded by the dispute between the BJP and the Congress in the Parliament, with Smriti Irani, according to the BJP, being ignored by Sonia Gandhi who apparently asked the Union minister not to discuss with her in the House.

The controversial issue led to a clash between the BJP and the Congress in Parliament. The BJP also said that Sonia Gandhi had allegedly shouted at Smrti Irani after the Union minister allegedly intervened as the interim Congress Speaker was talking to BJP MP Rama Devi.

On Thursday, BJP members including Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman protested in parliament against Mr Chowdhury over the comment and demanded an apology from the Congress party.

Importantly, Mr. Chowdhury issued a written apology to President Murmu over his ‘Rashtrapatni’ comment which caused a political uproar across the country.

In a letter written to the President, the President of Parliament expressed his ‘regret for having mistakenly used the word to describe the situation.’ “I am sure it was a slip of the tongue. I apologize and ask you to accept the same,” Mr. Chowdhury wrote in the letter.

The BJP insisted the comment by Mr. Chowdhury was not a slip of the tongue as claimed by the Congress leader.

Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju told ANI that it was not a slip of the tongue. “If you look at the clip, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury clearly (referred to President Murmu as) Rashtrapatni twice, then he called him Rashtrapati. Such words should not be taken lightly,” said Mr. Rijiju.
