Man Suffering From Breathing Issues For Years Had a Tooth Growing in His Nose

In an unusual medical condition, a man was discovered to suffer from prolonged breathing problems due to a tooth growing in his right nostril. The rare condition of a 38-year-old man was reported in a study published in the New England Medical Journal by his doctors Sagar Khanna and Michael Turner. The man has been admitted to an ear, nose and throat clinic at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York with complaints of difficulty breathing through his right nostril, a condition he has been facing for years. Preliminary medical tests confirm a defect in her septum, a cartilage that separates the two nostrils. Further, perforation length of 2 cm at the posterior septum and calcified obstruction were also detected. Rhinoscopy, a procedure for nasal examination, in which the patient shows the appearance of a “hard, non-wet, white mass” on the floor of the right nose.

“Computed tomography of the paranasal sinuses shows a well-defined, radiodense mass consistent with an inverted ectopic tooth in the nasal cavity, which is thought to explain obstructive symptoms and septal perforation,” the two doctors wrote in the journal .

Ectopic eggs are eggs that do not follow their normal pattern during production and are found in places where they should not grow. This type of egg development is rare, occurring in just 0.1 to 1 percent of the population but most common in men as compared to women

The patient’s tooth, about 14 mm in length, was eventually removed by surgery and subsequent tests indicated that the patient’s symptoms of nasal congestion had resolved three months after the surgery.

However, this is not the first case to be reported in recent years. In early 2019, a 59-year-old man from Denmark was diagnosed with abnormal growth of a tooth in his left nostril that caused a loss in his ability to smell, LiveScience reported. The tooth was then removed surgically.
