At a time when the aviation industry is recovering from the severe impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, a man from Kerala, Ashok Aliseril Thamarakshan, is traveling through Europe with his family on a plane built in house.
The plane built by Ashok Aliseril Thamarakshan, which is now in London, during the Covid-19 lockdown.
Mr. Thamarakshan, a native of Alappuzha in Kerala, took about 18 months to build the four-seater aircraft.
The four-seater model “Sling TSI” has been named “G-Diya”, with Diya being the name of his younger daughter, The Times Of India reported. Mr Thamarakshan moved to the UK in 2006 to pursue his Masters degree and currently works for Ford Motor Company.
Ashok Aliseril Thamarakshan is the son of former MLA AV Thamarakshan.
Mr Thamarakshan – who holds a driving license – has visited Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic so far four times with his family.
Talking about how he got the idea to build a plane, Mr. Thamarakshan said, “Initially, I used a small two-seater plane for trips after getting my pilot’s license in 2018. But since my family has my wife and two daughters. , I asked for four-seater airplanes. But they are rare and even if I can get one, they are very old. “

In January, a month before the family made their daughter’s trip on the plane built by Mr Thamarakshan, his wife Abhilasha told The Sun that the family had started saving money during the first lockdown. “We knew we always wanted to have our own plane, and in the first few months we saved a lot of money because we thought we would give it a go,” Mrs Thamarakshan said.
To build his own plane, the 38-year-old visited the headquarters of the Sling Aircraft company in Johannesburg on the news that they launched a new plane, the Sling TSI, in 2018. After the visit the job, Mr. Thamarakshan ordered a kit to build his own plane.
With a lot of time on hand due to the lockdown caused by the pandemic and the money saved during this period Mr Thamarakshan has the opportunity to work on the project. The total cost to build the aircraft is estimated at Rs 1.8 crore.
