Former India fast bowler Ajit Agarkar is set to join Delhi Capitals as an assistant coach ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. The 44-year-old’s decision comes after Delhi did not renew the contracts of Mohammad Kaif and Ajay Ratra, who are assistant coaches for different seasons until 2021. Kaif operates in force from 2019 while Ratra’s stint is limited to one season (2021).

Agarkar is likely to play a number of roles while working as one of the agents to head coach Ricky Ponting. He will also be part of a team that includes Ponting, captain Rishabh Pant, batting coach Praveen Amre and bowling coach James Hopes, an ESPNcricinfo website said.

The former Pacer will join the franchise after the conclusion of the Indian series against Sri Lanka because he is part of the Star Sports broadcast team. The Sri Lankan tour, which includes three T20s and two Tests, is set to end on March 16th.

Agarkar, who led 288 wickets in 191 ODIs and 58 in 26 Tests for India, also guided Mumbai for the first time at the Ranji Trophy and helped them win the title in 2012-13. The Delhi assignment will be your first in any training role.

In the IPL, pacer played for the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) from 2011 to 2013. He also played for the Kolkata Knight Riders between 2008 and 2010. In all, he played 62 T20 matches and picked up 47 wickets.

The capital Delhi has been among the most regular and successful teams in the last few seasons of the IPL. They have been in the finals for the past three years, with a finish in 2020 when they lost to Mumbai residents.
