Bengaluru: The start of the Mayank Agarwal tradition will be back in action when the Indian team takes on Sri Lanka in the two-legged Test series which starts on 4 March.
Speaking ahead of the first test at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali, Mayank Agarwal emphasized the importance of the series and explained why the team’s goal is to win the entire Test match.
“I am very excited to be part of the team and part of the India Test team. I really look forward to contributing to the success of the team,” Mayank said.
“Every Test series is very important because of the World Test competition. Each test places points. Our team’s overall goal is to win every match we play and try to win as many points as we can from all the Test matches, ”the 31-year-old added.
Mayank went on to explain why he enjoyed the batting opening, but also added that he was open to batting down the order, if and when the team needed him to do so.
“The role of opening is key in Test Cricket because, in a five-day game, the openers set a date for the batter to follow. It’s something I’ve done all my life, I really enjoy to do that. With that being said, I do not always want to open batting. I also enjoy batting in any position the team wants me to bat, in any given position, “Mayank said.
Sri Lanka, in the last two decades, has a reputation for having a strong spin-off effect, especially in the longest format. Asian rivals are also known for delivering new football to the undefeated at the Test Cricket, which stands to become a challenge for open batsmen. But Mayank said he was prepared for any curveball Sri Lanka could throw at them.
“In India, as the opening batsman, you also have to be very good at facing the race. Personally, it does not faze me if you open the bowling with rotation or speed,” he said.
“We have grown up playing games all our lives. Personally, my thinking will not change much. I will look to do what the player is set to do. For a good start, set the scores for the team and let it read. One of the advantages of openings is, with all the difficulties in their approach, is that they have the space to score great performances, ”Mayank adds.
