Amaravati:

A senior police officer said Ananta Satya Uday Bhaskar was arrested in Kakinada district of Andhra Pradesh state on Monday for the murder of his former driver four days ago.

At a late-night press conference, Kakinada District Police Chief M. Ravindranath Babu said, “Based on his confession statement, technical data and other evidence collected, we have arrested the legislator for his involvement in the murder. He has also been charged with an examination of evidence, as he sought to photograph Murder as an accident.” The SP claimed that MLC and driver V Subrahmanyam got into an argument, near Mr Bhaskar’s apartment complex on the night of May 19, over Rs 20,000 still owed to the legislator.

“During this argument, Mr. Bhaskar hit and pushed Subrahmanyam, after which the latter, who was drunk, fell on an iron grill and was hit in the head. MLC tried to take him to hospital but doctors were unavailable in some hospitals in the area, after which he died Subrahmanyam succumbed to his injuries.”

The source added that the legislator then tried to portray it as a road accident as “Subrahmanyam was known to commit accidents when he was drunk.”

“According to our initial investigations, we have arrested the MLC. The investigation will continue to reveal more facts,” said Mr. Babu.

Three days later, police detained the deputy on Monday afternoon and questioned him about the murder. He was taken to the Government General Hospital on Monday evening for medical examinations, and then returned to the district police headquarters. He was then shown before a local judge.

Deputy Inspector General of Police J Bala Rajo oversaw the MLC interrogation.

Kakinada police have come under fire for the way they handled the case, even as opposition parties and Dalit organizations staged large-scale protests in various parts of the state to demand that the guilty lawmaker be brought to justice immediately.

The government of YS Jagan Mohan Reddy was also put on the defensive as Mr Bhaskar was considered a “very close” follower of the Prime Minister, who is also the Chairman of the YSRC.

After midnight on May 19, the MLC brought the body of his former driver Subrahmanyam in his car and delivered it to the victim’s family, claiming it was an accidental death.

Sarpavaram police initially booked a suspicious death case under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, although family members of the victim claimed it was a murder case and pointed the finger at MLC.

On Thursday night, Mr. Bhaskar came to Subrahmanyam’s house and escorted him away. Later, around two in the morning, he returned to Subrahmanyam’s house with the latter’s death and handed over the body to the family.

The legislator claimed that the driver died in a traffic accident, but when family members protested, he fled the scene, leaving the car behind.

Sarpavaram police confirmed that there was no sign of any road accident at the site (Nagamali Tota Junction), as alleged by the MLC.

The victim’s relative only allowed an autopsy after midnight Saturday when police finally agreed to change the case to a murder case. Accordingly, a case has been registered under Section 302 (Murder) of the Indian Penal Code and also under various provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against Uday Bhaskar.
