New Delhi:

Exactly one year after a judge was convicted by an autorickshaw in Jharkhand, a special CBI court in Ranchi today convicted the two accused of murder. The verdict will be announced next week.

The Jharkhand High Court is overseeing the investigation into the hit-and-run. The investigation began this February as a special court framed charges against two accused, driver Rahul Verma and his accomplice Lakhan Verma, both from Digwadih in Dhanbad. They were arrested about a month after the murder and were not granted bail.

Additional Sessions Judge Uttam Anand, 49, was passed out while out on a morning exercise around 5 am on July 28, 2021. Security camera footage shows that he was exercising on one side of the wide road when the autorickshaw drove off. to him, hit him from behind and ran away from the place, killing him.

He has been handling several cases of mafia murders in Dhanbad and has rejected bail pleas from two gangsters. He is also hearing a murder case involving a close aide of an MPA.

Even the Supreme Court took up the case two days after the murder, saying it had “huge ramifications”. The state government has transferred the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which took over on August 4 and filed its chargesheet about two months later.

The CBI later had to change its side after the Jharkhand High Court said it appeared the agency was trying to stall the investigation and protect the accused.
